Detecting fraudulent API activity for merchants

Context

Stripe APIs let businesses build payments and financial tools directly into their products.

Developers integrate Stripe’s APIs into their company’s applications to accept payments, manage subscriptions, issue refunds, and power other financial workflows. As these integrations grow more complex, developers need visibility into how their API requests behave and where things go wrong.

Problem

Merchants are exposed to fraud because they currently have no visibility of the suspicious API activity with their API keys.

When API keys are leaked, attackers make API requests to merchant’s payouts integrations and make fraudulent transactions.

My impact

I designed a new feature that flags API requests based on risk levels and enables merchants to take resolution actions.

Reflections

Interning at Stripe has pushed me to grow as a product designer.

Over the summer, I was part of Stripe’s first product design intern cohort. I interned in the NYC office as part of the Organization and Authentication Platform team. I’m very thankful for my manager Tina Xu and intern buddy Khoi Long for supporting me.

I became an AI savvy designer

At Stripe, I gained firsthand insight in how the top designers in tech were using AI. I used AI tools such as Claude to do deep research into the API space, understand the existing codebase, ideate on UI components and prototype designs to share out with stakeholders. I walk away from this experience as an AI product designer.

I learned how to think in systems and build system behaviours

I mapped how developers move from awareness → investigation → action, then identified other key surfaces across Workbench where fraud signals could be embedded directly into their existing workflows.

I drove alignment between cross functional teams

This feature required alignment between 3 different engineering teams. As the DRI designer on the project without a dedicated product manager, I drove alignment in technical requirements by sharing and presenting my work every week. I broke down milestones for how this feature can be rolled out.
